Fictional Ghost Story Collections by Peter Wise

Original ghost stories concerning fish, fishing and fishy places

My first book, Disturbing the Water, was a collection of fictional original ghost stories. It was favourably reviewed on The Rest is History podcast, in Country Life magazine, and across the fishing press, from Angling Times through to Fly Fishers’ Journal.

A follow-up collection, Chilling the Water, will be published in November 2025. This also features original full-page illustrations by wildlife artist Simon Trinder.

Both books feature what you might call traditional ghost stories, but rather than the standard settings of haunted houses or Gothic graveyards, they mostly take place around water.

Many of the protagonists are anglers, but you don’t have to like fishing to enjoy them, and there’s very little actual fishing – just some decidedly fishy places.

Many of the stories also feature elements of real history. In the first book, that included the English Civil War the Witch Craze, World War II and a Victorian serial killer. Historical settings or echoes in my follow-up collection include colonial India and Africa, a revenant medieval monk, the Khmer Rouge genocide and, once again, World War II.

I’ll be writing more about the individual stories on My Blog
